A whole generation of children

Almost a whole generation of children throughout the world is familiar with Sesame Street and the characters of The Muppet Show.

I know the meaning of generation, but what does "a whole generation" in the above mean? Thanks.

It includes everybody whose childhood fell between approximately 1970 and 1995 - the years when said programmes were at the height of their popularity and a generation being understood to last for roughly 25 to 30 years. Rover
