Some of the stereotypes of "nerdy"engineers (or computer programmers) include wearing white socks with dark pants (not fashionable!) and carrying a plastic thing like this in their pocket so the pens and pencils they carry all the time don't make marks on their shirt. He was saying that he fit the stereotype of a nerdy engineer.
