A weird sentence

Here is a sentence from Martin Eden, one fiction written by Jack London:

He tried to imagine himself she, gazing into those eyes of his, but failed in the jugglery.

Obviously,"imagine himself she" can only be analysed as "verb+object+object complement"; that is to say, "she", a personal pronoun, can be an object complement.

I think it is fairly weird because none of my grammar books has mentioned that personal pronouns can be used as object complements.

Anonymous none of my grammar books has mentioned that personal pronouns can be used as object complements. I suppose because it's not very usual. Not impossible though, as your example illustrates.
