A vs the hallway (article)

Dear Teachers,

He entered the building and walked down the hallway.

No hallway was mentioned before. I always thought that "the hallway" is correct here. But today I read in a book,
"he entered the building and walked down a hallway".

Why a hallway? Which is right??

Top answer

If there were more than one hallway, a hallway would be the appropriate choice. If there were only one hallway, either a hallway or the hallway would be possible.

Either is right. "The" denotes the hallway that was there. "A" implies that there was more than one hallway, and the person chose one of them.
