'a' vs 'the'

I extracted the following sentences from "Transformers," movie.
Could you tell me which one is right between "a" and "the" in the underlined part? (If both of them are natural and acceptable, just say so, please.)
Thank you.

Our planet was once a powerful empire, peaceful and just, until we were betrayed by Megatron, leader of the Decepticons. All who defied them were destroyed. Our war finally consumed the planet, and the All Spark was lost to the stars. Megatron followed it to Earth, where Captain Witwicky found him. It was an/the accident that intertwined our fates.

You really don't have to emphasize the accident since it's just been mentioned. It's quite clear what accident is meant and "an accident" emphasizes (focuses on) how they met, rather than what particular event that was. In conclusion, "the" would not be grammatically incorrect but unnusual.
