A visor protects your eyes; a helmet protects your head.

Helmets are typically more rigid than hats. Most are designed for specific activities. Bicyclists and motorcyclists wear different helmets. So do football players and baseball players. Helmets designed for use in dangerous construction zones, where things might be falling from above are called "hard hats."
A typical baseball cap (soft material) has a visor in front to shade the player's eyes from the sun. In the US, kids wear them backward, in the interest of independence, I guess (like wearing their pants below their hips).

Sometimes a visor and a face shield are similar. Someone operating a metal grinder usually wears a flip up face shild, in addition to safety glasses. It is oriented vertically, and protects/covers the entire face, while visors are usually thought of as being horizontal, above the face.
These industrial face shields are quite similar to what motorcyclists wear, except there's no helmet. (I believe most motorcycle helmets have the flip-up visor/face shields attached.)

Originally, a visor was only a sun shade, to protect the eyes. Now the term is used more loosely.
In the old days we used to see pictures of accountants and poker players with green celuloid visors/eye shades, which resembled a baseball cap without the cap.
