Alright then, I'll give you an example.

I saw the rain (clatter/clattered) on the pond.

I was standing near the lamp post, when suddenly a man appeared in front of me, asking for a dime. I gave him a coin and (left/leave) him behind.

Your first sentence is incorrect. You can not see the rain clatter. But, if you changed saw to heard then you would want to use clatter. For the second sentence you would want to use left. However, you could end the sentence with left. EX: I was standing near a lamp post when suddenly a man appeared in front of me asking for a dime. I gave him a coin and left. Hope this helps.
