She was a very good traveling/travel companion, and we had a lot of fun on our trip.

For me, traveling and travel both fit in the above and mean about the same. Correct me if I am wrong. Thanks.

They both mean the same thing but to my ear "traveling companion" sounds better and is probably the most common.
