a very

Hello,

1. He is a good boy. Ok.

2. He is a very good boy.

Is (2) correct?

I know that if there is a countable noun and being modified by an adjective, we put a or an based on the sound of the adjective.

What about the if an adjective is being modified by an adverb as in given above(2).?

Thanks.

He is a very good boy is correct. What else could it be? He is an extremely fast runner -- this is fine too.

  • He is a very good boy is correct.
  • What else could it be?
  • He is an extremely fast runner -- this is fine too.
  • In this case you would use 'an' since the adverb following it (extremely) starts with a vowel sound.
