a versus the e-mail. not sure

Can someone please help me with my question about articles? I am trying to set people up for an e-subscription. Once a person registers, an automatic welcome e-mail goes out. Someone complains to me she has not received one. So I try it on my end and it's OK. So I say to her,
'That's strange. I just tried it and I got an email.'
'That's strange. I just tried it and got the email.'

I can choose either right? 'The' is the auto email we both know about it. It's the one that gets send out. But 'an' is OK also. I think. Yes? No?
