Vocabulary

a versus an

Is there a general discussion on this?? I could not find one.

My question... are both of these correct?
1. Hans lives in an igloo.
2. Hans lives in a red igloo.

Or is 2 technically incorrect because "red" only modifies where Hans lives?

Both are correct.

In the second, 'red' modifies 'igloo'.

So it doesn't matter if igloo (which has a vowel sound) is the predicate. It only matters the word or adjective immediately following a or an... in this case "red" (with a consonant sound).

Whether we use 'a' or 'an' depends on the sound immediately following, whatever the function of the word beginning with that sound.
