A variety of noun, sigular or plural?

I learned that I should treat "a variety of ...." as plural noun.
But when I look into dictionary, I found this example sentence.

Ex) There is a wide variety of patterns to choose from

Then, "a variety of noun" can be a singular noun as well?

Could someone confirm this matter?

Thank you in advance for your teaching.
