Thank you for checking my question.
I found the following sentences.
We propose a comprehensive new protocol for sterilization of diagnostic equipment in hospital settings. The method of sterilization stipulated within this protocol depends on…
I have two questions.
First, why isn’t there “the” right before “sterilization” in the first sentence? Because “sterilization” has the modifier “of diagnostic equipment in hospital settings,” and the word “sterilization” is an uncountable noun here. So the author can group together “sterilization of diagnostic equipment in hospital settings,” and this is what he wants to state here. That’s why I thought there was “the” right before “sterilization.”
And in the second sentence, can I use “the sterilization” instead of the “sterilization” with no article in the original sentence? Because what the author states here is the “sterilization of diagnostic equipment in hospital settings” he mentioned in the first sentence, not “sterilization” in general.
Incidentally, I think if I use “the” right before “sterilization” here, “A method of the sterilization” would be modified by the modifier “stipulated within this protocol,” and become “The method of the sterilization.”
As one example like this, we can see the following sentences;
The structure is reinforced with steel and carbon fiber. The steel forms a…
Maybe these are difficult problems, but thank you for reading the entire question.
