A usage of the participle phrase

The Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) was created 1905 as more radical alternative to the AFL. Among its goals was the overthrow of capitalism. Although the IWW had some success organizing strikes, its revolutionary stance prevented the IWW from gaining much of a foot-hold. Perhaps its major accomplishment was to make the AFL seem, by comparison, less threatening to business leaders.

"had some success organizing strikes" = They managed to organize some strikes.
"had some success when they organized strikes" = They organized strikes and used them to achieve some of their goa
