Why on earth is there a in front of of Tuesday?

Imagine a sentence:

I can't remember when she died. All I remember it was a Tuesday as I had my driving test on that day.

See the point? It was a Tuesday (one out of many) but you don't remember/know which as you don't know the week, month and the year.
