a true/truthful story

Granny Peach is a true/truthful story.

"True" and "truthful" are both adjective and share the same root, and sometimes they mean about the same thing. Therefore I wonder if both of them fit in the above context. If not, why not? Thanks.

Generally speaking, people, not things, are truthful if they always tell the truth. However, a report or account of what happened can be regarded as truthful if we believe that the person who reported it reported the truth about it. Normally, though, people are truthful, and what is said or reported is true.
