A tricky sentence

The following passage is from the website as follows:

http://www.epubbud.com/read.php?g=H8AVF5J5&p=8

A trillion generations of unbroken parental generosity stand behind a bargain with your mother. A hundred good experiences stand behind your reliance on a friend. The long shadow of the future hangs over any transaction with your local shopkeeper. He surely knows that in making a quick buck now by ripping you off he risks losing all future purchases you might make.

The underlined sentence don’t make any sense to me.
I can guess this sentence in the literal sense and it makes a parallelism with next sentence.

But I still can not make out what it means.
Can you give me your thought?
(I know my question is vague, but that’s as best as I can,. Help me.)
