A tricky sentence

The passage below is from a website as follows:

http://www.epubbud.com/read.php?g=H8AVF5J5&two=1&tocp=7

Falling consumer prices is what enriches people (deflation of asset prices can ruin them, but that is because they are using asset prices to get them the wherewithal to purchase consumer items).

The structure of the sentence is not so complicated, but I cannot make any sense of it.

? I cannot figure out how deflation of asset prices can ruin people as consumer prices is falling.

? And I also don’t understand the reason suggested in the sentence, I mean how their use of asset prices to get them wherewithal to purchase consumer items can be the reason deflation of asset prices can ruin them.

I think I need more economics knowledge than sentence knowledge to solve this tricky problem.

Help me.

There's a difference between consumer prices and asset prices in terms of their economic role. 'asset prices' refer to the prices of shares, bonds etc. You should understand that people (customers) own these assets (shares, bonds) and if their prices fall, this automatically means that people/customers will have less money to buy consumer items.

  • So, falling asset prices, unlike falling consumer prices, are generally a bad thing.
