a transport vessel

Not long after midnight on February 3, 1943, a German submarine fired three torpedoes at the U.S.A.T. Dorchester, a transport vessel, and scored a direct hit.

To begin with, what does a transport vessel refer to? Is it a transport vessel for soldiers or supplies?

Second, the term "scored a direct hit" sounds like a sports jargon to me though I presume it indicates "hit the bull's eye." Could you shed more light on it concerning its origin? Thanks.
