Grammar

a tiger or the tiger

I'd be happy if someone would answer my questions. Thanks in advance.

Are A and B correct? If so, what's the difference?

A: A tiger is the strongest animal of all the beasts.

B: The tiger is the strongest animal of all the beasts.

I think a Noun in generic use is commonly used for expressing the basic features of something, so C is OK. Am I right?

C: A tiger is a large fierce animal living in a jungle.

If so, it follows that A is wrong. Am I right?

Hi, I'n not a native, but I would say that A doesn't sound good to me, because of that "a" and "the" together --> A tiger is the strongest animal of all the beasts. A and C sound good.

To me, "A tiger is the strongest animal of all the beasts" sounds as if you are talking about one particular tiger that happens to be the strongest animal in the world. If you are speaking generally, use either "tigers are the strongest animals" or "the tiger is the strongest animal."

Hi,
I was thinking about that while posting earlier... I have some doubts though. Can you use "a" instead of "one" when you want to point out you are referring to "one" bu

Hi, Kooyeen. In the examples you give, you are correct, you need to use "one." (You could substitue "one of these *****" for "one ball".) I was thinking more along these lines:

Hi, Kooyeen. I think you can use "one" as long as you are number conscious.
