A third conditional sentence

Could you please evaluate each of the following four sentences whether it is natural or not? --

(A) If you had gone there a week earlier, you could have seen a pro football game.

(B) If you had gone there a week earlier, you could have watched a pro football game.

(C) If you had been there a week earlier, you could have seen a pro football game.

(D) If you had been there a week earlier, you could have watched a pro football game.

Top answer

I'd go with D. "Had gone there" suggests that someone had already left for the game but he was still in the place where the football game took place. "Had been there" implies he had already returned from the game.

  • I'd go with D.
  • "Had gone there" suggests that someone had already left for the game but he was still in the place where the football game took place.
  • "Had been there" implies he had already returned from the game.
  • "see" carries the connotation that someone travels to someplace to watch the game while "watch" carries the connotation that someone is in the process of watching the game.
  • So in the case of your sentences, I think D is the most natural one because the speculation is that he had already been there so he would not have to travel there.

I would like to add that "One watches a football game"; 'see' is not the correct verb.
