A thing that protrudes to lock the door

Situation:

When the door is on the latch, we put the key into the keyhole; when we turn the key, there will be an object protruding out into a rectangular hole in the door frame, so that after the key has been pulled out, a second party won't be able to open the door by turning the handle. What is this object called in English?

Thank you. J.
