The results (of a test) give hope to the medical community that costly and occasionally dangerous blood pressure treatment drugs may soon become a thing of the past.

Is "a thing of the past" in the above equivalent to "a thing of history" and "history?" Thanks.

Carriages, in my part of the world, are a thing of the past. We drive cars.
