A tenses issue

I have to choose one of these 3 sentences, and they all sound valid to me.

They are tired, as they'd been working since four in the morning.
They were tired, as they'd worked since four in the morning.
They have been tired, as they'd been working since four in the morning.

Thank you.

None of them sounds good to me. I would say: They are tired as they have been working since four in the morning, or: They were tired as they had been working since four in the morning. CB
