I'm starting to read Dickens but it seems it would be a challenge 'cause just in the first lines I've encountered a problem. What is the meaning of the last part after ... ? Thanks a lot

First, he's saying... you know what? It was pretty cool back then. We had some wonderful times, probably the best times of my life. But yes, I remember it got very bad at times, too. So bad that we thought we'd seen the worst that could happen.
