What does "the time" in the above refer to? Does it mean the times of the test? If yes, why isn't the plural "times?" Thanks.

It's sort of a fixed expression. "most of the time" = "in most cases" The parameters may be established by context, but otherwise it would mean "overall" - out of all cases considered, most of them showed the specified result. " - A.

It's sort of a fixed expression. "most of the time" = "in most cases"

The parameters may be established by context, but otherwise it would mean "overall" - out of all cases considered, most of them showed the specified result.

You would almost think the expression should be, "most of the times" (plural), as in "How many times have I told you not to do that?"
