A summary of a story part 1

I have summarised a story. I have to teach this. I'll post it in four parts so that it can get your attention. Please, help me make it grammatically sound and natural but ignore the story.

Once the Muslims fought a battle in the early days of Islam. Many wounded Muslims lay dying in the battle field. One of them cried for water. It was soon brought for him in a cup. He brought it near his lips for drinking. But before he could take a sip of it he heard a cry for water from another wounded soldier.
