But while the hounds were eating the poor helpless stag he sadly thought that how foolish he was to be proud of his horns which had proved to be the cause of his death while his legs which he had disliked a moment ago carried him away beyond the reach of the hounds.

They tore him to pieces in your previous paragraph; he's dead!) how foolish he had been to be proud of his antlers, which had proved to be the cause of his death, while his legs, which he had disliked a moment ago, had carried him beyond the reach of the hounds.
