Quick-thinking five-year-old saves cyclist.

Cyclist Norman Pratt went out of control as he was coming down a steep cliffside road yesterday. and ended up hanging by his hands from a small bush, with a 200-foot drop below his feet.

Pratt started to cry for help, but with misgivings because it was very early in the morning when he started on his ride and there was no one to be seen on the mountain paths he was traversing. He managed to get a hold of the ledge with one of his feet, which somewhat alleviated the situation, but he still could not pull himself to safety. He kept on shouting for help at intervals. He was in a desperate situation. He thought of letting go and chancing the 200 ft. drop, but quickly put that out of his mind. A fall like that could be fatal.

Luckily for Pratt, Susie, a large Newfoundland, had been let loose by its owner and was wandering through the mountain paths. This is a large dog capable of pulling heavy objects. Pratt's cries attraced Susie and presently the dog found him. Susie grabbed hold of one of his arms by the shirt sleeve and started pulling him up. This, together with his efforts with his other hand and his feet, was enough so that he was able to get his upper body up over the ledge, and eventually inch his way up the cliff to safety. As the weary and shaken cyclist got to the trail Susie's owner happened to come by looking for the dog. Pratt enthusiastically thanked him and praised his dog's heroic efforts.
