Hi guys!

I read something about Thomas Jefferson and I confuse about a word "SQUARE" in this sentence;
"Thomas wasn't a square, but he did suggest the western states be divided into a geometric pattern."

What does "a square" mean?

Probably you realise, but there's a bit of joke going on here with "square ... geometric pattern".
