a spontaneous, fluent flow of words

"(...)radio announcers are expected “to produce the effect of a spontaneous, fluent flow of words – if not a forceful, pleasing personality – under conditions that lay speakers would be unable to manage”

Using uh and um in spontaneous speaking. Herbert H. Clark and Jean E. Fox Tree.

Do ESL/EFL teachers expect the same of their students?

<<Do ESL/EFL teachers expect the same of their students?>>Depends on the teacher. Personally, I stress the pleasing personality part more than the rest. It's handicap enough to be a non-native speaker in a place that's about as anti-immigrant as it's possible to be without having a sour personality on top of it.

Are you talking about California, there? And are you saying that if immigrants be nice everyone might just forget they are not one of you?

Yes.

No. I don't recall saying that. It's good to cultivate a pleasant personality no matter what other of life's advantages may or may not follow. Don't you agree?

Indeed I do, but once cultivated, I think one can decide not to offer it to all comers. Some don't deserve my pleasantness. My question was more about this part of the quote 'expected “to produce the effect of a spontaneous, fluent flow of words"'.

Actually, the word 'effect' is interesting there, as if to say that real spontaneity and fluency is quite unnecessary, as long as one produces the effect. I certainly wouldn't bother with these hair-splitting details with students. Spontaneity and fluency will come naturally eventually. In the meantime, the important thing is to learn the pluperfect subjunctives, right?

So, really, learners don't need teachers, right?
