A sort of idol?

Hi. I have a difficult time imagining a possible sentential situation in which we would use the phrase "a sort of idol." I can't fanthom (think of) a situation in which we use the word "idol" in types. Do you?

John Doe has been a sort of idol.

I would be comfortable with this, though.

John Doe has been sort of a idol.
