"a sort of" and "a sort of a"

Hello, would you please tell me what's the difference between "a sort of" and "a sort of a" ? when should I append a second "a" after "of"?

For example:

  • I am a sort of a philosopher, a sort of a theologian, a sort of a linguist, a sort of a mathematician, a sort of computer technician, a sort of a naturalist, ...

  • I am a sort of chubby guy that wants to tone up. How the hell do I do this?

Such phrases are rather idiomatic.

I'm a bit of a philosopher. Fine. I dabble in philosophy.

I'm a bit of philosopher. Incorrect, not at all idiomatic.



I like a bit of steak. Fine. I like to eat a piece of steak sometimes.
