A sort of

Can you please tell me whether "a sort of" can be followed by a plural noun? If so, does this sentence make sense?

Binoculars that people with low vision use are a sort of mini telescopes.

Or maybe I should say: Binoculars that people with low vision use are a sort of mini telescope.

Thank you

Hotmale The binoculars that people with weak vision use are like a pair of mini telescopes. You're right. "A sort of" cannot be used there.
