A somewhat confusing sentence

Hello everyone,

Does the sentence below sound natural to you?

While we don't have anything against Turks, and the way Bulgarian Turks were treated is both a taboo and was deeply unpopular back in the day, the Ottoman Empire itself is widely regarded as a foreign oppressor.

I might be wrong (probably am) but doesn't the underlined part sound a little strange? I think that the two words in bold are somewhat redundant. What do you think?

Thank you.
