Usage

A something hunt

I was about to use a common synonym for "fishing expedition" with the word "hunt," but the first word didn't come out. It's not a witch hunt, not a snipe hunt, but a radiating search for a particular desired result with a small but significant chance of success the kind of hunt you might expect Russian materials scientists to embark on for an alloy with a specific set of properties. I don't think it was a treasure hunt or a scavenger hunt, either. What kind of hunt am I forgetting?

Brainstorming:
A job hunt? Hunt and peck? Bargain-hunting? Hunter-gathering? Something to do with the Holy Grail? A quest?

That suggests to me an unknown prize with a directed set of clues. I was looking for something specific (contact information for a particular person) and scanning large files for hints.
