A smear of light puddles at the far corner

Above him a slurry of light barely leaks from the forty-watt bulb, mocking the sun and stars he loves. A smear of light puddles at the far corner of the furnace.

Hi,

Does a smear of light puddles in the above mean litterally "a dot of light frolics?" Does it have other more meanings than meet the eyes? Thanks.

Hi Angliholic The word "puddles" seems to be used as a verb here, and so it suggests that there is small area of light, roughly the size or shape of a puddle of water, at the far corner of the furnace. The word "smear" suggests to me that the outline or boundaries of this "puddle of light" are not terribly well defined.

I would just add that it's a very strange phrase. Don't think it's something you should start using in conversation!

Oh -- I just connected it with the preceeding sentence. "Slurry" is like watery mud -- the image is of light dripping from the light bulb like water/mud and collecting in a smeary, muddy puddle. Very strange image.
