in a serious condition

There are 25 of these offices scattered over the public lands of the West and Alaska, and the current work in most of these offices is in a serious conditions

Why "a" if there is "conditions" in plural?

After the bus accident, the hockey team were in a serious conditions

Simon is in a stable condition

There's no plural here. Is there any reason for that?
