A simple question

the book I read yesterday WAS not mine

or

the book I read yesterday IS not mine

which one is correct? I thought the book didn't belong to me yesterday and still doesn't belong to me today so should I use " IS" right?

Top answer

was is used as past tense and the use of "is" is present tense. Do you follow? if the sentence was present it would look like this: The book I'm reading is not mine.

Yes.. you're right, but what if Anonymous is not familiar with the fact that it is depending on what tense is used. I only stick to past/present because it is at a basic level since this thread belongs to basic english grammar.
