A short composition entitled 'If Awards Were Everything'
I'm really not a native speaker of English. Please help me improve this short composition written by my niece. Thank you in advance.
If Awards Were Everything
Trophies, medals, certificates – I have all these awards. But they’re nothing to me – a mess. It’s not because I’m a negativist but because I’ve experienced that honors are mere symbols of academic success.
I ranked fourth in all the second-grade classes. My family, however, wasn’t satisfied. They couldn’t be happy because they wanted me to rank first.
Since my pre-school days, I’ve been studying very hard. Still, my parents aren’t happy. Honestly speaking, I really want to be in the class ranking – not necessarily at the top – so that they’ll simply be proud.
Sometimes I ask myself why those parents whose children get low grades are just satisfied. Perhaps, they understand their children’s range of knowledge.
I often hear my classmates say that I have high grades. To my parents, these grades are low. They don’t understand that such an achievement is all I can do.
I wish I could be one of those students with low grades. Why? Because their parents are satisfied with their low grades.
I hope that someday my parents will understand me. Then if they’re satisfied, these awards will be everything.
