Vocabulary

a shade too big

Matt's clothes were just a shade too big for me.

In the sentence above the phrase A shade and Too big are in contrast, so how could we bring these two in one sentence???!!!A shade= (very slightly) and too big means (very much big).....very slightly # very much

Thanks a lot

"Too big" doesn't have to mean very much bigger. It just means, well, that it's too big. I lost weight when I had the flu last month, and now these pants are too big.

Oh, no. I can still wear them, I just have to wear a belt. I don't like the way they look, though.
Well then, let's go to the Greasy Spoon for lunch. We'll have your pants fittin

I would understand either "a shade big" or "a shade too big" to mean the same thing.

It's actually a painter's term: " that blue is just a shade too dark to represent a real sky".

Not necessarily. The glass was too full, so it overflowed [it takes only one drop to make it too full].

Hi,
Consider this scenario.

In a store, you try on a sweater. The sales clerk asks you, 'How does it fit?'

You answer 'It's a shade big'. This sounds like you may still buy it, ie no problem.

You answer 'It's a shade too big'. It sounds a little less likely that you will buy it, ie you see it as a problem, although a small one.

Best wishes, Cl
