A sentence with a tag question

I'm wondering how to write a sentence with a tag question correctly when the subject of the sentence is a pronoun like "nobody." I mean, is the following sentence correct? --

Nobody could afford to buy such an expensive car, could they?

Beisides, I'd like to know if the sentence "Nobody could afford to buy such an expensive car, could he?" is correct if we choose to use traditional English, rather than contemporary English.

Top answer

" I mean, is the following sentence correct? -- Nobody could afford to buy such an expensive car, could they? Yes, correct.

  • " I mean, is the following sentence correct?
  • -- Nobody could afford to buy such an expensive car, could they?
  • Yes, correct.
  • " is correct if we choose to use traditional English, rather than contemporary English.
  • It's not incorrect, but I'd avoid using it.
