A sentence in the past perfect

"I'd known her since she was four years old".

Although it's an excerpt of a grammar book, it aroused my supsicion. Does the sentence make sense at all?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Use past perfect when you talk about an even that occurred before a second event (which uses simple past). For example, "I had know her since she was four years old." You know longer know her because she has moved away or maybe she had died. "I had known her" means that you no longer know her because of a situation.
