A sentence from "Leiningen vs the Ants"

Hi guys,
The following is from "Leiningen vs the Ants,"

The biggest danger now, he decided, was the point where the western section of the ditch curved southwards. And arrived there, he found his worst expectations justified.

I don't understand how "arrived" works here. Is it a verb in the past tense, or a past participle? If the former, how can a verb be used without a subject? If the latter, shouldn't we use "arriving" or "having arrived?"

Thank you!

The sentence is incorrect. Probably it is a misprint for "arriving" or "having arrived", as you suggest.
