A sentence from a novel 'Loser;

You grow up with a kid but you never really notice him ... He's part of the scenery, like the parked cars and the green plastic cans on trash day.

Hi,

What is "the green plastic cans" followed by "on trash day" in the above? Does it intimate that only on trash day, can people there see the green plastic cans? By the way, does the trash truck there go to collect trash only on certain days, not every day? Thanks.
