A sentence

Hello,

Why does this sentence has such a word order?
The instant her voice broke off, (And not her instant voice broke off)ceasing to compel my attention, my belief, I felt the basic insincerity of what she had said.
This is taken from The Great Gatsby.

Thanks

Nina_NiaThe instant her voice broke off
= As soon as her voice broke off.

You can do this with various words that indicate a short amount of time.

The instant it happened, ...
The second it happened, ...
The moment it happened, ...

you can read it backwards: I felt .. what she said... when her voice broke off.
