Hello,

Could you tell me please if this sentence is correct?

'But she couldn’t. She is dead!’ It almost escaped his lips, but he checked himself.

Can I add 'he managed to check himself?' Is it necessary?

Yes it is correct. I would contract the She is to She's. Yes, you can add managed to check himself, it isn't necessary but I would add it, (I was thinking it while reading the sentence).
