Could you tell me please what should be used here in this sentence after 'usually'; 'did', 'was doing', 'was', 'was sitting and looking'?

Once when I was sitting and looking at the picture just like I usually was.

Yes, Of course. Here is the complete one.

Once when I was sitting and looking at the picture just like I usually was it suddenly animated.

I was not sure if the verb to animate can be used here and I asked about it in one of my new posts.
