A sentence

Hi,

I read a sentence and had a hard time understanding what it means...

"Guilt," she said, "the gift that keeps on giving"

Can someone help me?

Thanks a bunch!

"The gift that keeps on giving" is such a well-known advertising slogan that it lends itself to ironic uses. Of course the selfish gift giver wants his gift to continually renew the receiver's gratitude. Guilt is a terrible thing to "lay on" someone.
