A sentence

Hello, teachers!

Is this sentence correct, especially the prepositions and the article? Do we need 'an' or not? If both are correct, which is common?

- He started out a student in/at/of a medical school before he turned (an) expert on computer viruses.

(You can't "turn an expert" or "turn into an expert".)

A caterpillar turns into a butterfly. Water turns into ice if it's cold enough.

People don't "turn into" some occupation.

John became (*turned into) a carpenter.
Sally became (*turned into) a nurse.
